Different visualization strategies for structuring non-hierarchical learning tasks in hypermedia are used until now. Do these strategies differ in learning effectiveness? In the present study, a hypermedia learning environment about cell biology was investigated. The graphical properties of a content module were created in two different ways, either depicting close-up views of the cell organelles or with connecting lines between the cell organelles and their respective technical terms within the graphic of the whole cell. Background Labels with special instructions regarding how a prescription medication should be taken or its possible side effects are often applied to pill bottles. The goal of this study was to determine whether the addition of illustrations to these labels affects patient comprehension. To assess the effectiveness of absolute risk, relative risk, and number needed to harm formats for medicine side effects, with and without the provision of baseline risk information. A two factor, risk increase format (relative, absolute and NNH) baseline (present/absent) between participants design was used. The content of TV news is often not retained or understood by the audience. This article discusses a concept for increasing retention and comprehension levels relating to TV news. Results of an experimental reception analysis with 215 participants show that retention and comprehension can be improved by employing a narrative device to present TV news. In this article, the effect of a local, content (as opposed to structure) oriented navigation tool is investigated, i.e. mouse-over hyperlink previews. A usability experiment is described in which three groups of participants were exposed to three different versions of a website: without hyperlink previews, with content oriented, semantic previews, and with task-oriented, pragmatic previews. Participants were asked to execute search and recall tasks, and to evaluate task and hypertext.
